Designing your own garden can be a bit daunting. There are so many things that need to be considered: existing views; the direction of the sun; let alone style and plant selection. The solution is to do what the professionals do, put it down on paper.

Firstly, draw an outline of your garden to scale with the black sketching pen (located in the Garden Design Set) and a rule. You might also mark the North point, the wind direction and make a list of the features you would like to see in your garden; paths, lawns, trees, perennial beds, a pond etc. Then, sketch in the different zones and garden features such as paths ponds and patios, keeping an eye on the scale as you do so. Avoid any excessive detail (for best results photocopy your design prior to adding colour detail.)

Lay in the main areas of colour. Lime Green and Olive Green have been used for the shrubbery with meadow green as a fill in and of course Grass is just the colour for the lawn.

Use Sandstone for the patio areas and any rockery and add Canary, Red and other greens to detail the shrubs and trees.

Finish off with any plantings and ornaments adding colour according to season.
