Profile: Tim Fisher
Tim recently worked with Letraset to produce the artwork and how-to information for the new AquaMarker Artist’s Sets. Tell us a little bit about yourself… I was born in Leicestershire and have had a lifelong interest in art. I’m well known for my love of colour and experimentation. I like to work in a wide range of media. Much of my art has been reproduced as fine art prints and cards, with originals in public, private and corporate collections throughout the world. I’m also a regular contributor to the Leisure Painter and occasionally, other magazines. I also run workshops and painting holidays as well as demonstrating to art groups and at shows throughout the UK. What were your initial thoughts as you first picked up an AquaMarker?
I subsequently took them with me on a break to Overstrand in Norfolk, where they were used for recording tonal work, making colour notes and creating small watercolours. One of their big advantages is that relatively small amounts of water are required, so little distortion occurs on good quality cartridge or unstretched watercolour paper. Water can therefore be conveniently carried in a couple of water brush pens. Also very useful is the intensity of colour that can be achieved by working directly from either tip of the pen. With a background in a range of traditional media, including acrylics and watercolours, which transferable techniques would say are most important when using AquaMarker? A large selection of watermedia techniques can be transferred and replicated by Aquamarkers. There are also some additional techniques that AquaMarkers are useful for, such as increased control when delivering strong pigment to the surface, spatter, bleeding colour and of course just drawing and sketching.Due to the nature of the pigments, many more layers can be applied than with traditional watercolours , which is extremely useful when building up subtle layers such as flesh tones.
This year sees the publication of my first book, ‘How to Paint Flowers in Acrylics’. I’m also currently appearing on the Sky Arts TV Channel, demonstrating acrylic techniques. I also have a series of articles on how to paint flowers in a variety of media, which are due to be published shortly in The Leisure Painter magazine.
