If you want to create truly authentic Manga, Screen-Tone is the medium of choice - add texture and shade to give your work a real sense of drama and depth.

Japanese comic pages tend to be black and white. Overlaid dot tints and patterns are used to add dramatic effect or create a distinctive mood.

Use of Screentone pattern consists simply of removing the printed film from the backing sheet and applying it to your artwork:

Cut the tone larger than you require
Using a scalpel or artist's knife, cut out a piece of film slightly larger than the area you intend to cover. Avoid cutting through the backing sheet.

Smooth onto the artwork
Use the scalpel point or your finger nail to lift up a corner of the film that you have cut around. Carefully peel it away from the backing sheet and place it on your artwork. The transparency of the Screentone sheet allows for precise alignment; however the film can be repositioned if the placing is not quite right first time. When correctly positioned, smooth over with your finger. (Unused trimmings may be returned to the backing sheet and re-used later.)

Trim away excess
With a scalpel or artist's knife, cut the excess film away from the area you wish to tone. Since the texture is printed on the top of the film you may if you wish scrape away parts of it using a scalpel. Finally place a piece of paper over the tone and burnish well to achieve a perfect adherence.

Overlay tones for creative effects
There is considerable scope for overlaying patterns and tones to achieve original creative effects. Moiré patterns are achieved by overlaying screen tints.

  • Screentone's low tack adhesive makes repositioning easy, but bonds firmly when burnished.
  • The patterns are printed on clear, self adhesive acetate film which is supplied with a backing sheet.
  • The translucent release paper, which is laminated to the acetate film provides protection and ensures a long shelf life.
  • Screentone's matt surface stable acetate film base is glare free and printed with a dense black photo opaque ink.
  • Screentone is heat resistant; it can be safely copied through all normal processes, including dyeline.
  • The surface printing of Screentone allows the patterns to be removed with a sharp knife or mechanical eraser to produce highlights and fine detail work.
  • Screentones' transparent film makes it possible to integrate a large number of different patterns on a single artwork to represent almost any surface texture or tonal value of light and shade. Up to four different patterns can be overlaid to create vivid special effects.

    How-To

One of the great things about Screen-Tone is the variety of effects it lets you achieve with just a small number of well chosen textures and tones.

Once you start overlaying sheets and adding highlights and patterns, the possibilities are endless. Here are some techniques you can use:

Screentone Image1 As a ataring point, ink out your image so you have a good outline to work with - you can make photocopies to preserve the original. A light blue pencil is useful for making out areas where you don't want to see an outline since most copiers can't detect this colour.

2 Lay down your selected Screen-Tone sheet over the image area you want to cover - use a sharp blade to cut a sheet section just bigger that the outline. Work carefully to avoid cutting through the backing paper.

3 Once the basic areas of pattern and shade have ben filled, overlay Screen-Tones to add deeper areas of shadow or to create different textured effects. Overlaying two identical Screen-Tones will darken down areas of your work or you can overlay different tones to achieve a range of interesting effects.

4 You can add highlights to your work by using a knife to scratch away sections of Screen-Tone, exposing the white of the paper underneath. For softer, more blurry effects you can use a rubber eraser on Screen-Tone to create a variety of patterns.

When you are happy with the poitioning and layuout of the Screen-Tones on your artwork, rub down firmly to ensure good adhesion.
