Flytying Set How-To

Basic Marker Techniques …

  • ProMarker colour gets darker each time you go over a spot, so layer the same colour over itself for darker tones.

  • ProMarker colours are transparent so when two different colours overlap they will mix to produce a third colour.

  • ProMarkers contain alchohol inks and dry quickly. However if a second colour is applied while the first is still wet, the two will blend into each other.

  • Letraset Bleedproof Marker paper is specially treated on one side to prevent bleed through. Make sure you work on the correct side.

Use twin-tip ProMarkers in fly tying and in making fishing lures…

Making flies that match the natural insect’s profile and shade is not only very effective, but it’s also the most satisfying way of fooling the wily old trout that’s refused every other fly you’ve ever offered him!

Creating a fly of the correct profile can be a work of art in itself, but using Twin Tip ProMarkers means you can take your imitations one stage further, easily matching the colouration of the natural insects.

A well-chosen selection of ProMarkers lets you achieve almost any colour without the expense of obtaining avast, range of coloured fly tying materials!

Always try and colour your fly in a well lit area – this wayy ou'll get the correct effect. If you carry a few pens with you when out fishing, you can adapt to match the hatch on the bank. Be sure to replace ProMarker caps after use.

    Colouration of hackles
For hackled flies, take a pale coloured hackle and, holding it by the stalk, place on a paper background. Using the broad edge of the ProMarker’s chisel-tip, brush from the stalk to the tip in one clean movement.

If you require a darker tone, overlay the same colour or alternatively mix two colours to get the precise shade you require.

Allow the hackle to dry fully before tying it to the fly.

    Colouration of synthetics

Some synthetics absorb ink very quickly whilst others do not absorb it at all – ideally you should test for this first by using the ProMarker on a spare scrap of material.ProMarkers are particularly effective when colouring plastic body materials for two-tone nymphs. They are also good for creating new shades of pearl tinsels forribbings and winging materials.

Spinner wings are transformed with an easy brush of ProMarker’s broad chisel-nib, whilst pre-formed sedge or spinner wings can have the veins of the natural easily detailed with the fine nib.

    Hair and fur
You can use ProMarkers for different colour effects as required. For a distinct, solid effect, add colour to synthetic hairs prior to tying in. For a blended effect colour, add colour after tying has been completed. With dubbing materials, colour before tying in and allow to dry completely before dubbing onto the thread – withs ome materials, you may need to tease and blend them after colouring to allow them to dub more easily. With deer hair fish imitations, such as perch, fill in using the paler olive and orange colours first then, when dry,add detailed barring using darker shades.
